EDC 503 SU 13 PKB Description - Sophi

Personal Knowledge base on Educational Reform

Evernote is very helpful for me both in daily life and academic life. It is more than an electric note or a simple cloud drive. Its function of tagging, web clipper, synchronization and sharing notes makes it a great tool to deal with the eruption of information nowadays. In daily life, I keep accounts and collect recipes with it. I academic life, I collect literature, organize articles, and write lesson plan.

  • How did you use Evernote and the Evernot Web Clipper to support your work in this course?

I created a folder and named it EDC 503, in which there are five notes. I put terms and its introduction, such as high-stake tests in one note, valuable news about educational reform the second, notes that I made in class the third, materials from professor the fourth, and my assignment the last note. Sometimes I didn’t bring my computer with me so I couldn’t use it in class. But I wrote down on paper, took a photo of it and then sent it to Evernote through my phone. It is very convenient for me. When I go back to china a year later I don’t want to see that piles of notes and documents occupy the rare space of my suitcase.

  • What other uses for your PKB did you develop as you got more comfortable with Evernote?

As I got more comfortable with Evernote, I developed two uses for my PKB. Before I introduce them I should make it clear that I treat how to cook as an important knowledge. One use is to write lesson plan and another is to collect recipes. I created a folder named as LESSON PLAN and put introductions, games, group work and so on in different notebooks within it. Then I tagged each note according to its functions. For example, I put jigsaw and its introduction in group work and then gave it two tags, learn to corporate and book reading. What I should do when I write lesson plan is that ask me some questions first, such as what parts should be included in the plan? Why I want to use this part? Then I could search them, tailor them and finally organize a nice plan effectively. I also collected recipes with it and even made comments on it. Now I only collect the recipes that I am capable of, but I plan to create a new folder named as Dream Dishes later to collect the dishes that I want to learn. When I invite friends to dinner I won’t be worried about what should I cook any more. I just sort them through tags, such as pork, spicy, soup according to my friends’ preference and then selected some of them. I will know what the best choice is quickly.

  • Describe your PKB’s organizational scheme. How many notebooks have you created? What (if any) tags are you using? What uses (if any) have you discovered for note links?

I uploaded the picture of the notebooks and tags that I created. I have fifteen notebooks, including 69 notes. I uses seven tags. But I have to keep changing them as more and more note was created. My way I organize these notes is an embodiment of the change in my though about things around me. I need more time to organize it better as planned. Note links is very useful for two reasons. One is that it helps me to save the memory of note. Because Evernote has limits of unloading, so I should screen what should I upload or web clip before I unpload. Another reason is that it is easy for me to go back to the original web pages that when I want to cite.

  • Describe at least one metacognitive protocol that YOU develop to argument your current thinking. This could be a study strategy that you have adapted, a way to organize your research, or so other way of organizing your new knowledge for writing, planning, etc. The also be strategy that you think would be useful for you (or others) for some future purpose.

The way that the professor Fogleman uses Evernote also enlightened me. In next semester I will tutor some students to learn Chinese. I plan to create folders for them each students and manage the material for them. What more, I could record their prepress and give them some response per month.

What is most important for me is that the use of Evernote enhances my awareness of taking advantage of technology to improve my future teaching and learning.
